New A2 motorway section with EU funding
PLN 765 million from European Funds will support the construction of a new A2 section of over 63 kilometres, which will connect Siedlce and Biała Podlaska. The expansion of the A2 highway is one of the key infrastructure projects in eastern Poland, which will contribute to improving transportation accessibility, road safety and economic development in the region. Funding for this project comes from the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate, Environment 2021-2027 (FEnIKS) program.
“The expansion of Poland’s road network improves transportation accessibility, supports local communities and contributes to equalizing development opportunities between regions. A modern and safe road infrastructure is the foundation of the country’s development. Thanks to such investments as the construction of the A2 highway, we are creating a cohesive and better connected Poland – a country where it is easier to travel, do business and live every day.” – said Dariusz Klimczak, Minister of Infrastructure.
On 10 June, the Centre for EU Transport Projects signed an contract with the General Directorate of National Roads and Motorways for funding worth PLN 765 million. The total cost of the investment will exceed PLN 2.9 billion.
Strategic road investment
The project involves the construction of a new section of the A2 motorway from Siedlce to Biała Podlaska with a length of 63.4 km and 1.9 km of the S19 express road. Among other things, three road junctions (Siedlce Wschód, Łukowisko, Biała Podlaska), as well as engineering structures (bridges, viaducts), Service Areas and maintenance infrastructure will be built. The project is being carried out under the ‘design and build’ system.
“We are mobilizing contractors so that the entire section of the A2 freeway Siedlce – Biała Podlaska can be handed over to drivers later this year. Its construction has already entered the final stage of implementation. What remains to be done are surface works, works on facilities, elements of infrastructure related to environmental protection and BRD, and finishing works,” added Paweł Woźniak, acting General Director of National Roads and Motorways.
To the benefit of the region and its inhabitants
It is expected that up to 290 million users per year will be able to use the newly built section of the A2. Journey times will be significantly reduced, saving almost 109,000 man-days per year.
“As CEUTP, we are supporting the transport sector for the third financial perspective in a row – a total of more than PLN 200 billion of European Funds in previous funding periods and close to 100 billion in 2021-2027. On many motorways, trams or railway stations all over Poland you can see notations reminding you that these investments were made thanks to EU support”. – noted Joanna Lech, Director of the Centre for EU Transport Projects.
Proven partner
The construction of the new A2 motorway section is the thirteenth project of the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways carried out in cooperation with the Centre for EU Transport Projects under the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate, Environment 2021-2027 programme. The total value of projects that have received EU support to date exceeds PLN 7.5 billion.
The project has received funding from the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate, Environment 2021-2027 (FenIKS) programme under the following priority: Support to the transport sector from the Cohesion Fund, Activity FENX.04.01: Roads in the TEN-T core network.
