The first two contracts for funding under the National Recovery Plan have been signed
Today, on 29 December 2023, we signed two contracts with the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways to cover the projects. These will be the first funds from the National Recovery Plan earmarked for the modernisation of the Polish roads.
As part of the non-competitive call for proposals announced in December 2023 for undertakings E2.2.1 (investment in transport safety), support could be sought by: General Directorate of National Roads and Motorways and the General Inspectorate of Road Transport. The total amount of planned support is more than PLN 3 billion.
The aim is to increase the road transport safety
Under the call for proposals, projects involving the construction of 90 km of bypasses, the upgrading of 305 danger spots on national roads and the installation of 128 automatic road surveillance devices were eligible for support.
The aim of the investment is to eliminate transit traffic from densely built-up residential areas (village centres) and to reduce the negative impact of congestion on the surrounding area, as well as to improve the safety and fluidity of road traffic (including transit traffic) along national roads. Improving the safety of vulnerable traffic users by, among other things, eliminating dangerous places and illuminating pedestrian crossings on national roads is also an important issue. This will improve road safety on the road network and reduce the risk of accidents. In addition, support includes the installation of automatic traffic surveillance equipment, including fixed speed cameras, sectional speed measurements, traffic light compliance devices and cameras at level crossings.
To begin with, 10 km of bypasses and 125 BRD tasks
We have already received two applications for the project:
- construction of bypasses in towns and cities on the national road network managed by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways, which involves the construction of over 90 km of new bypasses on the national road network managed by the GDNRM. The project will construct short sections of new national roads that take transit traffic out of village centres;
- improving road traffic safety on the national road network managed by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways. The investments include measures to improve road safety in 125 locations on national roads managed by the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways.
Support from NRP funds
The contract for bypasses was signed for the amount of PLN 2 billion, while the contract for road safety was signed for almost PLN 290 million. Unblocking of funds from the National Recovery Plan will make it possible to quickly start financing needed investments that will improve safety on Polish roads.
Further contracts coming soon
In the coming months, it is planned to sign another contract with the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways to carry out 180 tasks to improve safety on national roads, as well as a contract with the General Inspectorate of Road Transport to build 128 new speed cameras.
