Over PLN 155 million from the European Funds for faster railway in Lower Silesia
Once again, we have granted millions of zlotys from the European Union for the development of Polish railway. We have just signed a co-financing agreement for the project titled “Prace na linii kolejowej nr 143 na odcinku Wrocław Psie Pole – Wrocław Sołtysowice” (Works on railway line no. 143 on the Wrocław Psie Pole – Wrocław Sołtysowice section). PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe received over PLN 155 million of support from the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment.
What’s going to change?
The project assumes, among other things, reconstruction of the tracks layout at the Wrocław Psie Pole station, modernisation of a road-railway crossing, as well as construction of new platforms, adapted to meet the needs of people with disabilities. The scope of works will also include renovation of the traction network, installation of modern railway traffic management system, construction of noise barriers, as well as reconstruction of a bridge over Widawa river and a culvert at the 155.748 km mark of the line.
Faster and more comfortable connections
After the modernisation, the line will be able to reach the speeds of 120 km/h in case of passenger trains and 80 km/h in case of cargo units. With that, capacity and safety on one of the most important railway sections in the Wrocław agglomeration will increase, and passengers will enjoy better travel conditions and service.
Value of the investment exceeds PLN 191 million, while the EU funding will cover PLN 155.5 million. Construction works are planned for 2026–2029.
About the FEnIKS programme
The European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment (FEnIKS) programme was approved by the European Commission on 6 October 2022, and is the largest EU programme in Europe – both in terms of budget and the scope of support.
FEnIKS programme budget equals EUR 29.3 billion. Funds are intended, first and foremost, for the development of transport, energy technology, and environmental protection. The programme supports Poland’s sustainable development, as well as transformation into a low carbon economy, focusing on investments in modern technological and social infrastructure.
Railway with EU support
The majority of FEnIKS funds was allocated into investments in the railway sector. Some of them are implemented under the FENX.05.04 “Kolej, kolej miejska i bezpieczeństwo kolei” (Railway, light rail and the safety of railway transport) action – the same one that supported the modernisation of railway line no. 143 on the Wrocław Psie Pole – Wrocław Sołtysowice section.
As part of the same action, co-financing can be granted, e.g., towards projects related to the construction, renovation, and modernisation of railway lines, engineering structures, implementation of the ERTMS system, or electrification of routes. In the scope of light rail, the support covers modernisation of lines and traction networks, construction of stops, stations, and transfer hubs, as well as power supply systems. The program also provides for investments into digital passenger service and ticketing systems, allowing for better transport integration and facilitating the use of public transport.
With FEnIKS, railway transport – long-distance, regional, and urban – becomes a more and more competitive mode of transportation, providing passengers with faster, more comfortable and safer travel.
