Support from funds for the purchase of modern vehicles for the Road Transport Inspectorate

We take care of safety on Polish roads. We have transferred more than PLN 27 million from the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate, Environment 2021-2027 (EFICE) program for the project entitled “Strengthening the Capacity of the Transport Inspectorate II”.

Poland a European leader

May 6 marks European Road Safety Day. This is an opportunity to make drivers aware of the great importance of safe driving, in accordance with the rules and common sense. This is the only way to reduce the number of accidents on European roads.

In 2025, the European Commission reported that Poland was on track to meet its goal of reducing road fatalities by 50% by 2030. Between 2019 and 2024, we recorded a 35% drop in fatalities, the best result in the entire EU (with the EU average being only about 12%). Even better, the figures for 2025 show the number of casualties fell to a record low of 1,651. This means that in a decade, we have reduced the number of road tragedies by more than 40%. For this unprecedented progress, Poland received the prestigious PIN Award, dubbed the “Oscar of road safety” (source: Police Statistics – Annual Reports).

European funds for road safety

One of the services that supports improving safety on our roads is the Road Transport Inspection, which inspects drivers’ working hours, vehicle weight, tachographs and exhaust emissions, among other things.

Conducting inspections in the field is made possible by special vehicles called vans with specialised equipment for inspecting the technical condition of cars. On the last day of April 2026, we provided the GITD with more than PLN 23 million for the purchase of 51 such vehicles, which will then go to the 16 provincial road transport inspectorates (WITD).

Why is this important?

The new vehicles will allow, among other things:

  • Intensify and optimize ITD’s activities in the field of vehicle technical inspection
  • improve the efficiency of vehicle inspections
  • Restrict unfair competition in the market for transportation of passengers, goods, animals, perishables, dangerous goods, etc..,
  • increase road safety
  • take care of the environment.

What the agreement is about

By the end of September 2027, the General Road Transport Inspectorate will purchase a total of 51 van-type vehicles for 16 emergency service units. The planned total cost of implementing the project is expected to be over 36 million PLN.

These are vehicles with an office compartment and specialised equipment, such as:

  • equipment for assessing the level of exhaust emissions from fuel combustion and wear and tear of certain vehicle components
  • a set of truck scales for weighing vehicles in the field
  • measuring devices: tape measures and altimeters
  • remote early detection devices, enabling inspectors to efficiently and quickly inspect vehicles equipped with smart tachographs via a remote connection system.

In addition, each van will have photovoltaic panels installed on the roof with a capacity of min. 500 watts, along with the necessary infrastructure to recharge the additional battery(s). This will make it possible to carry out inspection tasks in a more efficient and environmentally friendly manner using the newly purchased vehicles.

The special vehicles purchased under the project are essential for carrying out the statutory tasks of the Road Transport Inspection and will serve to improve the efficiency of the inspection activities carried out.
