Via Carpatia Under Construction – CEUTP Experts Visit the Construction Site of the S19 Section North of Lublin
Experts from the CEUTP Department of Environmental Protection visited the construction site of a section of the S19 expressway north of Lublin, which is part of the international Via Carpatia route. The site visit provided an opportunity to review the progress of the work and the challenges associated with the implementation of one of the most important road projects in eastern Poland.
The section of the route currently under construction will be approximately 100 km long. Once completed, the Lublin Province will have full access to the Via Carpatia route. The project is of significant importance not only for the national transportation network but also for the development of connections in Central and Eastern Europe.
During their visit, representatives of CEUTP, with the support of the Lublin branch of GDDKiA, had the opportunity to take a close look at both the scale of the work being carried out and the environmental protection measures being implemented.
Key takeaways from the visit
- The construction of the S19 expressway is a large-scale and highly complex project being carried out while maintaining traffic flow,
- The project requires a close integration of infrastructure objectives with the protection of areas of high natural value,
- Environmental protection measures, including wildlife crossings, retention basins, and properly designed migration corridors, play a key role,
- The implementation of the project also requires addressing specific environmental considerations, such as the protection of natural monuments or adapting the course of the work to administrative decisions,
- Modern road infrastructure requires the simultaneous implementation of solutions that support traffic management, user safety, and the coordination of emergency services.
As part of the program, our employees also visited: the GDDKiA Traffic Management Center, construction sites for engineering structures and environmental facilities, as well as existing wildlife crossings over the S17 expressway, where they could observe the results of the renaturation of migration corridors.
The Via Carpatia project demonstrates how important it is to combine the development of modern transportation infrastructure with respect for the natural environment and the safety of road users.
