Investment for security and development: Construction of a road tunnel in Sulejówek

Today we signed a contract to support project no. KPOD.09.07-IW.02-0006/23 “Construction of a road tunnel at km 21.050 of the railway line No. 2 Warszawa Zachodnia – Terespol at the junction with the district road No. 2284W in the town of Sulejówek.” The project will be 100% funded by EU funds. The investment period is scheduled to run from 2023 to 2025, with total expenditure amounting to an impressive PLN 97,339,810.20.

Project KPOD.09.07-IW.02-0006/23 in brief

The subject of the NRP project is the construction of a road tunnel in Sulejówek, at km 21.050 of railway line no. 2 at the junction with district road no. 2284W in the town of Sulejówek, together with the removal of the existing level crossing, the adaptation of the existing road layout and accompanying works.

This ambitious project will significantly influence the process of spatial and economic integration in the Warsaw agglomeration area, nationally and internationally. This is an important investment that will not only improve the safety of train traffic, but also of road and pedestrian/bicycle participants within the intersections of railway lines with public roads.

Safety first

The aim of the project is to reduce the number of accidents at level crossings, increase the fluidity and capacity of rail traffic and reduce the number of rail level crossings.

The implementation of the investment will also contribute to the abandonment of speed restrictions at level crossings, which will help to reduce journey times and minimise the risk of accidents.

Improving the comfort of travellers and the development of the region

The construction of a road tunnel in Sulejówek is related to both safety issues and developing the region’s transport infrastructure. This investment is part of a larger global project involving the improvement of safety at rail-road intersections, which is being carried out under Stage VI of the OPI&E 2014-2020, FEnIKS 2021-2027 and NRP programmes.

Cooperation and synergy of projects

This project dovetails with other investments, such as the OPI&E 5.1-21 project “Improving safety at railway intersections with roads – Stage II- viaduct part,” which includes the design and construction of a double-decker crossing in the town of Sulejówek at km 19.376 of railway line No 2, as part of which design documentation will be produced for the facility in question. It demonstrates that these investments are coordinated to maximise the benefits of the activities.

Environmental impact

It is also worth emphasising that the implementation of the project takes environmental aspects into account. Improving safety at level crossings will help to reduce the negative impact on the environment – if only by eliminating “bottlenecks,” which at peak times, with high volumes of both rail and road traffic, generate significant congestion.

The Sulejówek road tunnel project is an investment of major importance for safety and traffic development in the Warsaw metropolitan area. Its implementation will bring numerous benefits, including increased safety, increased traffic flow and improved travel comfort. It is also proof that carefully planned infrastructure projects can influence the positive development of the region and represent an important step towards the future of sustainable transport in Poland.
