Trains are coming back to the Giżycko – Korsze route: modernisation of line no. 38 with the support from the European Funds is almost complete

In December, trains will be coming back to the Giżycko – Korsze route. As a result of the investment of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A., co-financed from the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment (FEnIKS), residents and tourists will enjoy faster, safer and more eco-friendly travels.

What’s going to change?

  • Electrification and modernisation of the Ełk – Giżycko – Korsze section,
  • Passenger trains reaching speeds up to 160 km/h,
  • Travel time on the Ełk – Olsztyn route shorter by approx. 50 minutes,
  • New platforms, viaducts and overpasses,
  • Increased safety on railway crossings.

Why is that important?

The aim of the project is to increase railway accessibility within the region, improve punctuality and comfort of travel, as well as ensure interoperability of Polish railway infrastructure.

Funding

  • Overall cost: PLN 470 million,
  • EU funding: PLN 357 million,
  • Implementation duration: 2023–2025.
