Comfortable train travel thanks to investment on the C-E 65 line

The soon-to-be-completed modernisation of railway line no. 131 brings forth faster, safer, and more comfortable travel between Katowice, Tarnowskie Góry and Lubliniec.

The works included comprehensive replacement of tracks, turnouts, traction network, and railway traffic management system. A third track was constructed on the Chorzów Batory – Chorzów Miasto section, which increased the line’s capacity. Once the new timetable takes effect, passenger trains will reach speeds of up to 140 km/h, and the travel time from Chorzów Batory to Tarnowskie Góry will be shorter by approx. 7 minutes (31 minutes total).

The investment also significantly improves conditions for cargo transport. Modernisation of the route connecting Śląskie Voivodship with seaports improves conditions for longer and heavier trains, while the increase in capacity allows to transport more cargo by rail.

Total value of the task exceeds PLN 1.5 billion net. The investment is co-financed from the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment (FEnIKS) 2021–2027 programme.

Comfortable and safe stations, as well as new local solutions

On Bytom station, three platforms were equipped with new benches, bright lighting, and a sound system. Information on departures can be found on displays and at interactive kiosks. Two underground passageways and lifts guarantee comfort and safety when accessing trains. Historical layout of tiles was preserved on the platforms.

We have changed the aesthetics of the tunnels with murals by Mona Tusz – large-format paintings allude to railway tradition, Bytom’s history, as well as the region and local environment. Those paintings help make the waiting for a train more pleasurable and emphasise the role of railway in the city’s daily life.

Train shed in Bytom received a new roof, windows, LED lighting and reinforced construction. All works were conducted according to the guidelines laid down by the heritage conservationist – traces of war and the historical nature of the building were all preserved.

Travellers can also enjoy new comfortable platforms on the Bytom Karb and Bytom Stroszek stops. A new Chorzów Uniwersytet stop, as well as renovated stations in Chorzów and Radzionków, will increase railway accessibility.

New modern viaducts, as well as new roads and passageways for pedestrians and cyclists in Radzionków and Chorzów, have improved road traffic safety, as well as public transport.

Investment in numbers:

  • 4 stations and 2 new stops

  • 80 km of tracks and traction network

  • 181 turnouts

  • 29 bridges and viaducts

Conclusion of all works is planned for the end of 2025. Thanks to this investment – realised by PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe S.A. – railway connection between Chorzów, Bytom, Tarnowskie Góry and Nakło Śląskie becomes more accessible, eco-friendly and focused on passengers’ comfort, as well as regional growth.
