New trams in Szczecin. Moderus Gamma trams have gone on routes

On Friday, March 28, the new vehicles were presented to journalists and invited guests at the Głębokie loop. This is the first purchase of brand-new fully low-floor trams for Szczecin in more than 10 years.

Project and funding

The investment is being carried out by the company Tramwaje Szczecińskie as part of project No . FENX.03.01-IP.02-0008/24, which aims to purchase 30 fully low-floor trams, including 10 two-way trams.

Phase I includes the purchase of four two-way trams and a specialized technical vehicle necessary for infrastructure maintenance. The subsidy granted by CUPT as an intermediary institution of the FEnIKS program amounted to more than PLN 32.9 million. The project constitutes an operation of strategic importance for the implementation of the program.

Modern rolling stock for Szczecin residents

Moderus Gamma trams have been produced at the Modertrans factory in Poznań – so far 170 units of the model have already been built and are running in Poznań, Wrocław and Łódź, among others. The Szczecin vehicles are Gamma LF12AC BD models – single-space, three-car, articulated trams nearly 32 meters long, capable of carrying 240 passengers at a time (46 seated and 194 standing). They are fully low-floor and bi-directional – with doors on both sides of the vehicle, making it possible to operate routes without loops.

Passengers can enjoy Wi-Fi, air conditioning and USB ports. The vehicles are equipped with four torsion drive bogies, which reduce track wear and noise levels, and a state-of-the-art power-electronic drive reduces electricity consumption and CO₂ emissions.

Effects on passengers

The introduction of Gamm into service has already brought the first noticeable changes. The frequency of Line 4 during rush hour has increased from every 9 to every 6 minutes. Ultimately, the new trams will also go to lines 7, 8 and 12, the latter of which is expected to be reactivated around the vacations, after the reconstruction of Powstańców Wielkopolskich Avenue is completed.

Thanks to this investment, more than half of the more than 80 trams running in Szczecin during peak hours will be low-floor or partially low-floor sets – especially important for the elderly, people with disabilities and parents with strollers. All 12 trams ordered are expected to arrive in Szczecin by the end of May 2026.
