CEUTP supports the construction of a new tram line in Gdańsk
The agreement for co-financing from the European Funds has been signed on 16 July 2025 by Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, the President of Gdańsk, and Joanna Lech, the Director of CEUTP. This took place in the presence of, among others: Dariusz Klimczak, the Minister of Infrastructure, and Jacek Karnowski, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy.
We connect Gdańsk
“This is the first agreement for co-financing from the FEnIKS 2021–2027 programme, which we, as CEUTP, concluded with the city of Gdańsk. We are even more pleased that it concerns such a strategic investment” – stated Joanna Lech, Director of CEUTP.
The new tram line with a length of 3.75 km will connect Gdańsk’s southern districts with Wrzeszcz – one of the most important transfer, commercial and educational centres in the city. With this investment, travel time from the south to Wrzeszcz will shorten to even 12 minutes. During rush hours, up to 2,500 people will be able to use the trams per hour, and the units will depart every 5 minutes.
“I am convinced that thanks to the investment, which is scheduled for completion in 2029, the conditions and comfort of travel for the residents of Gdańsk and the entire Tricity will improve. The support of this infrastructural project from the European funds will also contribute to the reduction of exhaust emissions in urban public transport” – stated Jacek Karnowski, Deputy Minister of Development Funds and Regional Policy.
The scope of investment
- construction of a new 3.75 km long tram line,
- modernisation of a 0.6 km long existing tram line,
- 7 new stops,
- 4.8 km of a new bike route,
- construction of a tunnel under Wileńska Street (280 m, using an open excavation method),
- green tracks.

Why is that important?
- Faster, more comfortable and safe travel to Wrzeszcz and Oliwa.
- Improved travel and living comfort in the city.
- Increased availability of public transport – stops and vehicles will be adapted to the needs of people with limited mobility, the elderly, and parents with baby strollers.
- Improved traffic flow in the city.
- Reduced noise, CO2 emissions and pollution.
- Consistent tram network – new line will close the so-called tram bypass of Gdańsk, improving flexibility of travel across the city.
A proven partner
The co-financing agreement signed today for the amount of PLN 259.5 million is another example of great cooperation between the Centre for EU Transport Projects and the city of Gdańsk. The city benefits, directly or indirectly, from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRRP) support – e.g., for the purchase of 10 electric multiple units, which are to facilitate communication with Tricity (agreement concluded in June 2024 with Pomorskie Voivodship).
Whereas, in the previous financial perspective, Gdańsk received over PLN 446.8 million from the Infrastructure and Environment Programme for projects such as the improvement of pedestrian and cyclists’ safety, the construction of the Biskupia Górka viaduct, and the modernisation of public transport. The city is also a beneficiary of projects realised by other entities with the use of EU funds – among others, by PKP PLK and GDDKiA.
All of those investments not only improve the comfort of daily travel, but also create competitiveness, accessibility and economic attractiveness of Tricity – for residents, investors and tourists.
Implementation schedule
- 2025 – signing of the co-financing agreement,
- 2025 – planned signing of a contractor agreement,
- 2026 – planned start of construction works,
- until 31.03.2029 – completion of the project.
The project is co-financed from the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment under the FENX.03 – “Transport miejski” (Public Transport) priority.
