Over PLN 2 billion from European Funds for Warsaw Public Transport

Two billion and 25 million zloty will be received by the City of Warsaw from the European Funds for the development of public transport. The funds will be used for the construction of the last section of the second underground line and the construction of a tramway route to Wilanów.

Both investments come from the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment 2021-2027 (FEnIKS) programme. The first project, the construction of a tram route to Wilanów, together with the purchase of rolling stock and associated infrastructure (phase II), of which the Tramwaje Warszawskie company is the beneficiary, will receive PLN 900,000,000.00 from the European Union. The second investment, i.e. the construction of the second underground line with associated infrastructure (stage IV), includes PLN 1,125,000,000.00 for the City of Warsaw.

Underground line with funding

As part of the contract signed on 27 November 2024, Warsaw underground will receive EU funds to complete the construction of the second line of the underground railway. The total cost of the project, which includes the construction of the last section of the M2 line and the purchase of rolling stock, is more than PLN 3 billion, i.e. EU funds will cover around a third of the expenditure on the last, Bemowo section of the M2 line. It is almost 4 km long and will include three passenger stations (Karolin, Chrzanów, Lazurowa), the Karolin technical-stop station and two route fans.

Work in Bemowo is already well advanced – the station bodies are ready, and the first two tunnels connecting Karolin and Chrzanów stations have also been excavated. Good progress can also be seen at STP Karolin, where many of the above-ground facilities (buildings, halls, etc.) are in a closed state. The electrical and plumbing systems are currently being laid. The new section will be ready in 2026.

Warsaw Trams – not only to Wilanów

As part of the funding contract signed today, 28 November 2024, Warsaw Trams will complete the staggered ‘Tram to Wilanów’ project. Under this name is a route that will eventually connect Bemowo, Wola, Dw. Zachodni, Ochota, Mokotów and Wilanów. Some elements of this investment are already being used by residents, some are under construction and others are planned.

EU funds will be used, among other things, for the section of track from Grójecka to Dw. Zachodni – including the construction of a tunnel section and Warsaw’s first underground tram stop. This section is the starting point for further expansion of the tram network – connecting Dw. Zachodni from ul. Kasprzaka and exit to Odolany. The funds will also go towards the construction of a new track at ul. Rakowiecka in Mokotów and completion of work on the main part of the route to Wilanów (along Puławska, Goworka, Spacerowa, Belwederska, Sobieskiego and Al. Rzeczypospolitej). Funding will also be provided for the track at ul. Św. Bonifacego to Stegny loop. Part of the ‘Tram to Wilanów’ investment is also the Annopol depot, which will eventually accommodate 152 trams. The depot has already started operating – the first trams left the depot on 29 October – and will reach its full potential in the coming months. The total value of the project is almost PLN 2.059 billion, of which the eligible costs are approximately PLN 1.476 billion.
