Nearly PLN 4 billion of EU funding for PKP PLK
Today, April 25, at the headquarters of the Centre for EU Transport Projects, a press briefing was held related to the concluding of an agreement to support the modernization of railway line No. 104 Chabówka – Nowy Sącz, on the sections Chabówka – Rabka Zaryte – Mszana Dolna and Limanowa – Klęczany – Nowy Sącz. As a result, PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe will receive nearly PLN 4 billion from the European Union for the reconstruction of over 43 km of the railway line.
Back on track
Thanks to the investment of PKP PLK S.A. after many years, trains will return to line 104. The recipient of the support will prepare a route for convenient passenger connections, increasing the residents’ access to the railway as well as the comfort and safety of traveling with an ecological means of transport and contributing to the increase in the attractiveness of the railway in the voivodship.
Thanks to the funds from the European Union, work on the accessibility of rail transport and improving the cohesion of the railway network is not slowing down. An example is the planned modernization of the railway line No. 104 Chabówka – Nowy Sącz, which will have a positive impact on the region and the inhabitants of southern Małopolska. Thanks to such investments, the role of Polish railways increases, and the society gains a connection that will increase the comfort of everyday life – says Joanna Lech, director of the Centre for EU Transport Projects.
Railway line No. 104 from Chabówka to Nowy Sącz is a project that will change the transport system of Małopolska. It is an ambitious investment, because it covers a very large scope of works, but thanks to its implementation, the safety, time and comfort of rail travel will improve, said Minister of Infrastructure Andrzej Adamczyk.
A new deal in intermodal transport
PKP PLK S.A. investment will open line No. 104 Chabówka – Nowy Sącz for bulk cargo rail transport of intermodal and combined cargo in the north-south direction, creating the RFC 11 “Amber” corridor on the Baltic – Balkans – Black Sea axis. It will partially relieve the rail freight corridor RFC 5 “Bałtyk – Adriatic”, running through the highly urbanized area of Upper Silesia.
The prepared route will ensure continuity and greater throughput of cargo, and thanks to the modernization of the existing and construction of new railway infrastructure, the transport capacity of bulk cargo between individual countries of the Visegrad Group will increase.
Construction and modernization
The project includes the reconstruction of a railway line with a total length of 43.89 km, including 28.77 km within the TEN-T network. The completed investment will improve passenger and cargo traffic on the following sections:
- Chabówka – Rabka Zaryte – 5.52 km (section A1);
- Rabka Zaryte – Mszana Dolna – 9.60 km (section A2);
- Limanowa station – 3.48 km (section C2);
- Limanowa (without the Limanowa station) – Klęczany siding – 12.62 km (section D);
- Klęczany – Nowy Sącz siding – 12.67 km (section E).
An important task in the project will also be the modernization and construction of new engineering facilities, including:
- construction of bridges (10 railway bridges, 4 road bridges);
- construction of 11 railway and 6 road viaducts);
- construction of the Męcina station;
- construction of a passenger stop in Mordarka, etc.
Project details
The total value of the project is over PLN 3.9 billion. The project will be 100% financed from EU funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
