More than PLN 2 billion from NRP for locomotives and wagons

Under the contract signed with the Centre, PKP Intercity received more than PLN 2 billion in EU funding for the purchase of 56 locomotives and the modernisation of 248 wagons. The funding comes from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (NRP).

The orders envisaged under the investment will be carried out only by Polish factories. The total value of the project is more than PLN 2.8 billion.

EU funding for railways and the Polish industry

Yesterday we signed a contract with PKP Intercity for non-refundable support for its project of more than PLN 2 billion from EU funds, i.e. more than 94% of the eligible expenditure of the investment. The money will fuel seven projects, including the purchase of modern locomotives and the modernisation of wagons. The two tasks related to the purchase of locomotives are worth more than PLN 1 billion, and the modernisation of wagons is an investment of PLN 1.2 billion. The acquisition of the aforementioned funds entailed the unconditional completion of all projects by mid-2026.

The NRP funds that will support PKP Intercity’s projects will feed the Polish industry. The contracts for wagons and locomotives will be carried out in Polish factories.

Routes served by the new locomotives and wagons

The new locomotives and wagons will serve routes almost all over Poland, including inter-province lines under a contract with the Ministry of Infrastructure. The connectivity map will include major conurbations such as: Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław, Białystok, Gdańsk and Poznań, as well as smaller cities such as Piła, Hajnówka, Lubartów, Sieradz, Krotoszyn, Kalisz, Lubliniec, Zakopane and Piotrków Trybunalski.

Development of Polish railways thanks to EU support

Once completed, the total EU funds used by PKP Intercity will amount to more than PLN 5.2 billion for investments worth more than PLN 11 billion. Projects to date have included the modernisation and purchase of 846 wagons, 96 electric locomotives, 60 electric multiple units, including 20 Pendolino train sets, as well as the purchase and modernisation of 43 diesel locomotives.

On the occasion of the signing of the aforementioned contract, a press briefing was held at our headquarters.
