Warszawa Zachodnia – modernisation of one of the most important railway stations in Poland is complete

Underground passageway under the Warszawa Zachodnia station is now open! This marks a symbolic culmination of one of the largest railway investments in Poland, the value of which reached nearly PLN 2.5 billion net. The project received support from the EU Operational Programme – Infrastructure and Environment (POIiŚ).

Modern Warszawa Zachodnia station means:

  • the longest underground passageway in the entire PLK network – 500 m long, 66 m wide, able to accommodate 26 service points, ticket booths, waiting rooms and toilets,
  • canopied platforms no. 1–8 with photovoltaic panels, which satisfy 1/3 of the station’s energy needs,
  • new overpass and three railway bridges, improving the traffic within the Warsaw Railway Node,
  • 36 km of new tracks and 137 turnouts, a modern signal tower, as well as a passenger information system,
  • full accessibility for people with limited mobility.

CEUTP’s role in project implementation

The Centre for EU Transport Projects (CEUTP) played a crucial role in the process of securing and settling EU funding, ensuring transparency and compliance with the EU cohesion policy. CEUTP as an intermediary institution:

Why is that important?

The modernisation of Warszawa Zachodnia station is not only about improving travel comfort, but also increasing capacity of railway network, shortening travel times and improving safety. It is an investment of national and European importance, consistent with the objectives of European Transport Policy.
