Over PLN 177 million from the European Funds for the development of tram transport in Szczecin
The Centre for EU Transport Projects has signed two agreements with the City of Szczecin for co-financing of projects related to the modernisation and expansion of tram infrastructure. Financial backing comes from the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment 2021–2027 under the FENX.03 – “Transport miejski” (Public Transport) priority.
The official announcement of the co-financing took place on 28 July 2025 during a press conference held at the Szczecin City Hall. It was attended by:
- Arkadiusz Marchewka, Secretary of State in the Ministry of Infrastructure,
- Stanisław Bukowiec, Secretary of State, Government Plenipotentiary for Combating Mobility Exclusion,
- Monika Sikora, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy,
- Joanna Lech, Director of CEUTP,
- Michał Przepiera, Deputy President of Szczecin.
“Investments in public transport are some of the most effective ways of using the European Funds. They have direct impact on the life of residents, development of cities, as well as environmental protection. Szczecin consequently realises the sustainable mobility strategy, and new agreements are another step on that path” – stated Monika Sikora, Undersecretary of State at the Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy.
Co-financed investments:
“Przebudowa torowisk tramwajowych w Szczecinie – etap II – Faza II” (Reconstruction of tramway tracks in Szczecin – stage II – Phase II)
- Total value of the project: PLN 387.4 million
- Amount of funding: over PLN 152 million
- Deadline: end of 2025
“Przebudowa ul. Szafera – etapy II i III (układ torowy)” (Reconstruction of Szafera Street – stages II and III (tracks layout))
- Total value of the project: PLN 109.4 million
- Amount of funding: over PLN 25.5 million
- Deadline: by the end of August 2025
Total amount of co-financing for both projects is over PLN 177.5 million, and the overall value of investments exceeds PLN 496 million.
New lines, new connections
“Cities need modern, low-emission and accessible transport system, and residents – fast and reliable connections. Projects we support today truly improve the quality of life in Szczecin. We are pleased that CEUTP can be a part of this change” – said Joanna Lech, Director of CEUTP.
Thanks to the agreements signed in Szczecin, new tram line sections were created:
- along Szafera Street – from the intersection with Romera and Modra streets to Żołnierska Street,
- and along Żołnierska Street – with a turnout in the direction of Klonowica Street.
Those are investments that residents of the city’s western estates – Zawadzkiego-Klonowica and Krzekowo-Bezrzecze – have been waiting for for years. In these areas, access to public transport can be limited, and daily travels mean struggling with traffic jams and transfers, and simply take longer. With new tracks, residents will gain direct, fast and comfortable connection with the city centre.
New quality of transport in the centre of Szczecin
Thanks to the co-financing, the city is reconstructing the existing tracks along Aleja Powstańców Wielkopolskich, together with the Pomorzany loop.
The co-financing agreement also includes the already-completed works related to the tracks along the following streets:
- Nabrzeże Wieleckie, Kolumba, Chmielewskiego, Smolańska, Budziszyńska,
- Nowa, Placu Ratuszowego and Dworcowa,
- as well as those involving the rectifier substation at Kolumba Street
It is a continuation of previous investments also implemented with the support from the European Funds as part of Szczecin’s track revolution, the purpose of which is to significantly improve tram connections as one of the key forms of urban transport, making it more attractive to residents, students, employees and tourists.
Benefits for residents
- Greater share of low-emission transport
- Faster and more punctual connections
- Improved accessibility of housing estates, campuses and sports facilities
- Less traffic jams, noise pollution and exhaust emissions
- Modern, safe and comfortable tram infrastructure
“We are nearing the end of implementation of our clean urban transport projects under the EU 2021–2027 perspective. We are grateful for the support, however, we are working even harder, preparing further infrastructure and rolling stock projects for co-financing from the EU funds, the implementation of which is equally important for the residents of Szczecin” – announced Michał Przepiera, Deputy President of Szczecin.
Szczecin – a proven beneficiary
Szczecin effectively uses finances received from the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment 2021–2027 programme. In June 2025, we have signed an agreement for the purchase of four low-floor tram vehicles (co-financing: nearly PLN 33 million). In 2024, we concluded a co-financing agreement for the construction of Szczecin Mertopolitan Railway – a project worth over PLN 307 million, realised by Stowarzyszenie Szczecińskiego Obszaru Metropolitalnego (The Association of the Szczecin Metropolitan Region).
