Częstochowa receives almost PLN 44 million from the European Funds for renovation of an important tram line
The project titled “Przebudowa torowiska tramwajowego do Kucelina w Częstochowie” (Reconstruction of a tramway track to Kucelin in Częstochowa) received funding from the European Funds for Infrastructure, Climate and Environment 2021–2027 programme. The investment, which is to connect the southern part of the city with its centre, is expected to cost PLN 83.4 million, of which nearly PLN 44 million comes from the EU support.
Co-financing agreement was signed on 22 October in Częstochowa by Joanna Lech, the Director of CEUTP, and Łukasz Kot, 2nd Deputy Mayor of the City of Częstochowa, in the presence of Dariusz Klimczak, the Minister of Infrastructure, and guests.
– Częstochowa is another local government receiving funds for the development of urban mobility. It is the next spot on the map of Poland, where zero-emission, eco-friendly tram transport becomes the main focus, – announced Joanna Lech during a press briefing.
Investment that connects the city
Modernisation of the tram line to Kucelin is one of the strategic investments implemented by the City Hall of Częstochowa. After modernisation, the line will connect new investment areas – property of former steelworks – with the rest of the city, facilitating daily commute of the residents and supporting the economic growth in the region.
Renovation of tracks, viaducts and traction network
By the end of 2028, new tracks are to be laid down along Aleja Pokoju, from Gilowa Street (including road crossing, pedestrian crossing and a stop located at the southern side of the street) to the Kucelin loop, which will also gain a new look. Two viaducts will also be renovated – a road one and a tram one – above a metallurgy line, as well as two crossings in the vicinity of Gilowa Street and the Ronald Reagan Roundabout. The scope of works also includes the construction of a new traction network, lighting, video surveillance, as well as a new expedition building on the Kucelin balloon loop.
Faster, safer, more eco-friendly
The aim of the project is to improve communication between the southern districts of Częstochowa, including Kucelin, and the rest of the city – once the works are completed, trams will ride faster and more smoothly, which will reduce travel time and increase punctuality. Accessibility of this form of transport for people with disabilities will also improve, thanks to – among others – construction of the so-called ‘stops without barriers’.
The modernisation of tram tracks will also boost the parameters of tram infrastructure and energy efficiency, reduce CO₂ emissions, as well as increase travel comfort and working conditions of tram drivers. All of this should also enhance the position of public transport as an eco-friendly alternative to cars.
