EU support for renovation of railway station in Zyrardow granted

The Center for EU Transport Projects has positively assessed the application of Polskie Koleje Państwowe S.A. for the reconstruction of the historic railroad station in Zyrardow. The investment will receive support from the European Funds for Eastern Poland (FEPW) 2021-2027 program.

The railway station in Zyrardow is another building that has received funding from the FEPW program, after Rzeszow and Chelm. This historic building, which was built in the 1920s to a design by Romuald Miller, is an important place on the city’s transportation map. It is here that regional and long-distance trains stop every day, mainly running on the Warsaw-Skierniewice and Warsaw-Lodz routes.

What will change

PKP S.A. plans a comprehensive reconstruction of the facility, respecting the historic nature of the building. Thanks to EU funding – more than PLN 24.6 million – a modern station will be built, meeting modern technical, functional, environmental and accessibility standards.

The work will include:

  • Roof and facade renovation
  • Replacement of window and door woodwork
  • Interior modernization, including moving ticket offices to the east wing and dedicating the west side and floors to commercial premises
  • Enlarging sanitary facilities and adapting them to the needs of people with limited mobility
  • Elimination of architectural barriers, including: construction of a ramp to the main entrance, improved access to the single-edge platform, reconstruction and marking of traffic routes in accordance with PRM TSI, and installation of visual and audio information systems
  • Upgrading technical installations and installing monitoring systems
  • Development of the area around the station, including landscaping, installation of bicycle racks, reconstruction of access roads, sidewalks, paths and parking spaces.

The project is being carried out in consultation with the conservationist and the local government.

Why is this important?

The main goals of the upgrade are:

  • Increasing user safety
  • Raising the standard of service for travellers, including those with limited mobility (in accordance with PRM TSI)
  • Increasing the attractiveness of the building and its surroundings
  • Optimization of the station’s functions – serving travelers in the first floor of the east wing, and locating city services in the western part and on the first floor
  • Improving energy efficiency
  • Reducing the failure rate of the building and installations
  • Reducing the negative impact on the environment.
