Nearly PLN 900 million from the European Funds for Eastern Poland (EFEP) programme for a new railway priority

The European Funds for Eastern Poland Programme for 2021–2027 (EFEP) is supposed to have two new priorities, i.e. support for military and civilian railway infrastructure and housing. These are changes assumed in the government draft resolution, approved by the Council of Ministers at the end of the year.

Over PLN 1.3 billion (EUR 319 million) is to be allocated to the implementation of the new goals. For this to occur, the changes to the EFEP need to be approved by the European Commission.

Security and development

Over PLN 888 million (EUR 209 million) is to support investments in the railway sector, which will serve military and civilian purposes. This is a response to threats related to the geopolitical situation, especially in the eastern regions of the EU bordering Russia, Belarus and Ukraine.

The new funds are intended to:

  • improve the cohesion of the railway network,
  • increase infrastructure resilience in crisis situations,
  • strengthen civilian and military mobility, including the possibility of evacuating populations, delivering goods and humanitarian aid, as well as moving troops and military equipment.

The European Funds for Eastern Poland for 2021–2027

The EFEP programme aims to consolidate conditions conducive to economic competitiveness and a higher quality of life in six voivodeships of Eastern Poland: Warmińsko-Mazurskie, Podlaskie, Lubelskie, Świętokrzyskie, Podkarpackie and the regional part of Mazowieckie Voivodeship (excluding Warsaw and the 9 surrounding counties).
